A Minneapolis performance venue abruptly canceled a scheduled performance by Dave Chappelle after facing backlash for the initial booking.

"To staff, artists, and our community, we hear you and we are sorry," First Avenue wrote in a statement via Instagram.

"We know we must hold ourselves to the highest standards, and we know we let you down.

"The First Avenue team and you have worked hard to make our venues the safest spaces in the country, and we will continue with that mission," the statement continued

"We believe in diverse voices and the freedom of artistic expression, but in honoring that, we lost sight of the impact this would have.

Chappelle has faced a great deal of criticism over the past year for jokes he made regarding the LGBTQ+ community -- particularly the trans community.

The special sparked outrage, protests and even employee walkouts at the streaming giant.
