Crimes Of The Future Review: So, Crimes Of The Future was released earlier today and there was a lot of hype for it. Who won’t be excited for David Cronenberg’s return to his own Makka? The Cannes film festival where he has achieved so many things.
David Cronenberg has made so many classics but at the same time, you can’t remember any recent movie where he left a mark. So, Crimes Of The Future was a major movie in lots of sense. But did it really hit the mark?
The answer is confusing because at some points the movie is really strong but on the other hand, it is really dull. You might even say that this might be the tamest movie out of all David Cronenberg’s movies in recent times.
People kept talking about how gross the movie actually is and how most of the fans left in the first 15 minutes only. And to be honest we find it really hard to believe that people left because of the gross nature of the movie.
Crimes Of The Future Review: Plot
Crimes Of The Future Review: The official synopsis reads “Humans adapt to a synthetic environment, with new transformations and mutations. With his partner, Caprice, Saul Tenser, celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances.”
The movie takes place in a world where humans have adapted to a synthetic environment. And in a world where new body parts are invented and pain is nowhere to be found. There will be chaos but what exactly is the endgame?
The plot of the movie has Cronenberg written all over it. You can’t find another movie more suitable for his return. You can say Cronenberg returning to body horror is like Beethoven going back to music.
Crimes Of The Future Review: What Worked For The Movie?
Stellar Cast
Crimes Of The Future Review: Let’s just talk about the performances of the artists involved in the movie. Because every performance in the movie was stellar. Fans thought that the weakest point of the movie will be the cast, but it turned out to be completely opposite.
Viggo Mortensen is just amazing as always and did some wonderful things with the role he was given. Léa Seydoux is undoubtedly the best performer in the movie and she steals the show every time she was on screen.
Her intensity and dedication to the role were something else entirely. And even though Kristen Stewart’s role was short it was the heart of the movie. And she understood it and delivered her best yet.
World Building
Let me just say the world-building by Cronenberg in this movie is just something else entirely. So many movies fail to make us care about the characters and story and it all comes down to the world and how they build it.
And with every character having something to devote to not only the ending but also the story that is going on, Cronenberg did it perfectly. You will realize how good the world-building is and how the movie was improved so much as soon as you watch it.
Classic Cronenberg
This is a Cronenberg movie alright and there is no mistake about it. As we said before Cronenberg returning to body horror is something that every single fan of his admires and wanted. People might not like this genre, but for the fans it is everything.
In either a bad way or a good way, this movie will leave an impression on you. You will think about the movie for a long time. And that is what Cronenberg does to you.
Crimes Of The Future Review: What Did Not Work For The Movie?
Monotonous
The movie did not dive deep enough for what it’s worth. For an almost 2 hour movie, nothing much happened. It was monotonous, to say the least. There is so much going on in the movie. There are so many emotions, something to take away.
But they are never deep enough for something to actually happen. You always feel kind of distant towards the storyline and the characters. Even though all of it was perfectly set up. And because of that the movie never reached its full potential.
Ending
The ending of the movie is not so bad but it is abrupt. Just when Cronenberg was getting everything sorted out and all of his ideas were taking the shape, the movie just ends. And it ends in a way where you think that 20 or 30 should have been there.
Story
The fact that even after everything this movie showed us was good, the main element that pushed the movie back was the story. We felt the emotions, and understood the world but were never able to care for it.
The story bored us to a certain extent and when we were not bored we were completely hooked. And that is where the movie lacked, it was good in parts but was completely out of it in other parts.

Crimes Of The Future Review: Is It Worth It?
Crimes Of The Future Review: If you are a Cronenberg fan you are going to watch this movie. This movie is by him for his fans. And these kinds of movies divide the fan bases into two different sections. You are either going to love it or just hate it.
And for us, we are on the first side. We loved the movie, loved the idea that was being presented in front of us. But we can’t really deny that something was missing throughout. There were so many ideas and none of them were executed to the mark.
Still, the movie is really good if you are into this kind of stuff. And will leave you with something to think about for quite a while.
