Born in the plains of Jammu, Shivkumar Sharma was born to Pandit Uma Dutt Sharma. He was educated in music since childhood, and the atmosphere in the family was such that the morning was sunny and the evening was spent in the shade of music.
Father started giving music lessons to Pandit Shivakumar from the age of 5. Father was doing research on the musical instrument ‘Santoor’ at that time. At that time he had predicted for his son.

That prediction of Pandit Shivkumar came true after many years. Actually, the father had decided that no matter what happens,
Shivakumar will become the first player in the country who will play Indian classical music on Santoor and take forward his civilization, bringing glory to the country.
The same thing happened, at the age of 13, Shivakumar started playing the santoor. Gradually he became an expert in this art and became a master of it.
At that time Shivkumar Sharma gave his first stage performance in the year 1955. His first program was held in Bombay.
