Bad bots can do everything from scraping data to hacking accounts, stealing personal information, and even ransomware attacks.

Bad bots can skew analytics metrics like page views and hurt conversion rates. They can also put your website under strain or even render it utterly unavailable through a DDoS attack.

    Identifying Bots

Bots are software applications running automated and repetitive tasks over the internet much faster than humans. They can be used for good or bad purposes. Good bots can verify that links work, collect valuable data, test websites for security vulnerabilities, and improve search engine optimization. Bad bots, on the other hand, can be unleashed to infiltrate websites and steal information, perform denial-of-service attacks, or crash servers.

Regardless of their intent, bot traffic poses significant problems for websites. Malicious bots strain servers and overload networks, resulting in slow site speeds that frustrate consumers and negatively impact search results. They also skew analytics metrics such as page views, bounce rates, and session durations. This distortion makes it difficult to make informed decisions about website design, product availability, and marketing strategies.

Fortunately, some signs of malicious bot traffic can be detected with the help of tools and stop BOT traffic. Abnormally high bounce rates, for instance, are a telltale sign of bot activity, as is a spike in traffic from an unfamiliar source. Another indicator is increased pageviews from a few users or requests spanning multiple pages. Finally, checking for suspicious geo-locations or IP addresses is a good idea.

    Detecting Bot Traffic

On every excellent bot tasked with indexing content, scheduling appointments, or automating customer service, there are malicious bots that cause actual harm online. From a website perspective, these bad bots can result in site crashes, poor performance, skewed analytics data, and even lost revenue.

While it’s impossible to eliminate bot traffic, many ways exist to detect and reduce it. The first step is to monitor in-depth analytics data, especially for sudden spikes in user traffic. Human traffic follows a predictable pattern, with high users at certain times (such as lunchtime or late at night) and lower numbers during other periods (like early morning).

Additionally, please pay attention to how visitors reach their goals on your site. Unusually quick completion times might indicate a bot trying to steal sensitive information by logging in or buying products. Lastly, consider using a WAF to filter out known bot traffic by preventing them from entering your data connection in the first place. A WAF can read all incoming data and flag traffic that matches known bot signatures by sitting between your server and the web. These measures will help you identify and block the most damaging bots and keep them away from your site. They’ll also lower your IT costs and protect your UX by reducing slowed load times, bot-induced click fraud, and other bot attacks.

    Filtering Bot Traffic

Bot traffic is any online web traffic that does not originate from a human. Some bots are helpful, such as checking for copyrighted content, indexing websites for search engines, or powering voice assistants. But for every helpful bot, there’s a malicious one that can spread malware, infiltrate sites to steal data or cause a denial of service attacks (DDoS). If bad bots target your website, it could reduce load speeds or even crash your server altogether. An excellent way to identify suspicious traffic is by checking Google Analytics reporting views. You can do this by adding a second dimension in your GA report and selecting the referral path for the date when you see a spike.

This will allow you to view the data from only genuine human visitors to your site. Another telltale sign of bots is an unusually high bounce rate or low time on site, which reveals that users are landing on your website with a clear purpose and leaving without clicking anything else. Ultimately, bots can damage your reputation with real viewers, advertisers, and search engine algorithms. Ad networks may detect fake clicks and terminate contracts, and Google can penalize your site by lowering its search rankings. Bots can also slow down your site and cost you money on PPC ads.

    Managing Bot Traffic

Bot traffic has become a regular part of the internet and can serve good and bad purposes. The “good” ones help ensure web pages function correctly, collect valuable data, improve search engine rankings, and perform other routine tasks. The “bad” ones have more sinister goals, such as stealing sensitive information from websites, clicking on ads to boost affiliate payouts, and committing fraud.

As a result, enterprises must recognize the growing presence of bots and plan accordingly. Luckily, some simple indicators can be used to detect bot traffic. For example, a significant increase in pageviews from a specific source or an unexplained spike in the bounce rate can indicate the activity of a bot.

In addition, it is essential to monitor the average session duration. A decrease in the average session length may indicate bot activity, as bots browse websites faster than humans. Finally, a sudden increase in visitors from a single region can indicate that a bot is infiltrating a website.
