Deepika Padukone and controversies go hand to hand. All of her movies somehow get involved in controversies. Her past movies like Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat were the hub of controversies.
And even now Gehraiyaan has been a major source of controversies. But this time the hate towards this movie is because of the topic of the movie. The topic of Extramarital affairs is so strong that there will be two groups of opinion.
And the thing is no one is wrong. People can have their own opinion regarding this movie and none of the group is wrong. Cheating in simple terms is the emotional depth of the partner who has been cheated on.
And the main focal point of hate that Gehraiyaan got was that it glorified cheating and justified it. We will talk about it in detail but let’s take a look at the movie before and should you watch it or not.
Gehraiyaan Plot
The movie revolves around Alisha and her cousin Tia. Both of them have been close since childhood and have spent their entire lives together. Alisha and her boyfriend have been in a financial crisis for a time now.

When Alisha meets Tia’s soon-to-be husband Zain, she falls for him. Zain is rich and both of them start having an extramarital affair behind Tia’s back. What will happen when Tia finds out about it? Is Zain truly is who he is claiming to be.
Gehraiyaan: What Worked For The Movie
Plot Driven
The movie starts as a cliche romantic movie but slowly and steadily turns into plot and event-driven. And it is one of the strongest fortes of the movie. This kind of noir plot-driven is very rare in Bollywood cinema.
We already knew the plot of the movie. But the way it shapes up to what it is was just amazing. It was intense throughout and it was really good.
Portraying Reality
In an ideal world, people would talk to their better half, talk and sort things out before cheating. But that is not the case in the real world. People cheat and it is a harsh world out there. And that is exactly what Gehraiyaan portrays.
It does not try to poetically justify it in any sense. It just shows you exactly how it is. And that is the reality. You might feel hate towards the characters, but that was the exact aim of the movie if you think about it.
Performances
Deepika Padukone was definitely the standout performer in the movie. Her performance was just brilliant. The hate that you will feel for her character shows you how brilliant her performance actually was.
Ananya Pandey also gave a very decent performance. If anyone trolls her after this performance they are doing it just for the sake of it. Siddhant Chaturvedi was also fine and gave a decent performance.
Direction
Shakun Batra really did an amazing job here. The movie looked so aesthetically beautiful and that was not even the case. Shakun Batra handled the character drive so beautifully that it was phenomenal.
Gehraiyaan: What Did Not Work For The Movie?

Bollywood Cliche
The movie was kept real for the most part until the last 20-25 minutes. The last 25 minutes of the movie were somewhat of Bollywood Cliche. Especially when Deepika Padukone turned out to be pregnant. But other than that the movie was kept on a ground basis.
Gehraiyaan: Does It Glorify and Justify Cheating?
Now, the main question is does Gehraiyaan glorify or justify cheating? The answer solely depends on what you think glorifying is. We have had movies like Biwi No.1 and No Entry in the past where extramarital affairs were used as comic affairs.
And that is the same with Gehraiyaan. Gehraiyaan portrays a plot of cheating in the real world. But it does not glorify it or justify it in any sense. It is your choice to perceive the movie in any way that you want.
And that point is the movie worth watching or not. We think that it is worth watching at least one time. It is not a cult classic or anything, but you can watch it once. But it is not a family movie in any way.
