Men Review: A24 is really a brilliant studio. All of the movies are really weird and amazing at the same time. And ‘Men’ is just like that. We actually don’t have an idea who this movie caters to, but it is really brilliant at the same time.
Alex Garland’s style is just impressive throughout. It is a disturbing, eerie, and incredibly off-putting movie that will really make you uncomfortable. It will disturb you internally till the very last scene.
And the best shocker came in the form of how layered this movie actually is. It is not a simple one-toned movie that will follow just a simple story with lots of jumpscares. It has a very good story that will unfold throughout the entirety.
It is definitely a movie worthy of a cinema hall release. And we haven’t had a horror movie this good in a very long while. That is why Men is even more special than all the other horror movies we have seen recently. You may like: The Sound Of Freedom: Release Date, Preview, Cast, And Other Details
Men Review: Plot
The movie revolves around Harper, who has recently turned into a widow. After her husband killed himself by throwing himself from the balcony. And to deal with this trauma, Harper retreats alone to a beautiful English Countryside.
She went alone for healing but did not know it would become her biggest trauma. Someone or something keeps stalking her. At first, it was all normal and Harper thought of dealing with it normally.
But what begins as a simmering dread becomes a fully formed nightmare. One from which she can not get out. And the nightmare is filled with her darkest memories and fears and some deeply buried secrets!!
Men review: What Worked For The Movie?
Supernatural and Disbelief!!
There is a debate in the movie throughout. Most of the time the horror is not supernatural but rather dismissive of the mere fact. It was visible from the trailer as well. When the officer completely denied that someone is stalking Harper.
On the other hand, we have supernatural aspects as well. And all of them are just so disturbing and eerie that they will make you squeal. There has not been a movie this disturbing for quite a while now.
The balance between both of these aspects is just so different and completely organized. It really is a wonderful sight to see both of the aspects being played out in such a brilliant manner.
Rory Kinnear
Were you impressed by how James McAvoy played eight different characters in Split? Well, in front of Rory Kinnear in this movie, he does not even hold a candle. And it is not about how many characters he played.
It is about he played every single character he was given so wonderfully. There was not a single instance where he was let loose and felt like he was lacking. He played every character which is more than 8 by the way, brilliantly. Also read: Downtown Abbey: A New Era Review – A Cheerful, Golden Death
Cinematography
Well, it goes without saying how brilliant this movie’s cinematography is. Don’t get us wrong, the movie does not look beautiful. And that is acceptable because it didn’t have to look beautiful in any way.
That was not the motive of the movie. The motive was to unsettle us and it was done brilliantly and there is no doubt about that. Some of the shots in the movie are outright scary and completely disturbing. Something that will stay with you for a long time.
Men Review: What Did Not Work For The Movie?
Portrayal Of Toxic Masculinity
At the core, the movie is absolutely about toxic masculinity and women empowerment. But it completely fails to portray that. While the supernatural and horror aspects of the movie are smart, the main area lacked that smartness.
It was like they came out and just say “Men are bad” and then started to focus on the horror and supernatural aspects. And that is something that really kills the movie for you. Because it tries so hard to portray and that fails every time.
Ending
If you think that Alex Garland’s other movie endings are confusing, you haven’t watched this one yet. The ending of the movie tries to be simple and effective. Yet, it turned out to be something messy and completely confusing.
It took a hell lot of time for us to understand what really went down at the end. And that is said in a bad way because that was definitely not the intention of the movie at any level whatsoever. It just turned out like that and that is bad.
Men Review: Is It Worth it?
If you really want to watch a horror movie, then ‘Men’ is completely worth all your time. And the fact that this movie is released in cinema halls makes it a hundred times better; definitely, one of the best horror movies we have seen in a while.
But at the core, the movie felt incomplete and completely off-guard. There are lots of problematic points in the movie. But if you can ignore those facts and want to watch something disturbing that will frighten you, Men is definitely the movie for you.
