Rudra Review: While some aspects of Rudra: The Edge Of Darkness was amazing, some scenes were quite confusing for sure. But this fact can’t take away anything from the cast and all the makers of the series.
They tried to make something special and nearly succeeded in that as well. Rudra is an official remake of the British show Luther. Luther is one of the best detective shows of the modern era, and sadly Rudra was not able to match that level.
But the fact that it is not a complete copy-paste makes me so happy. The writers actually tried to make it different and bland it in Indian reality. But they fail so many times during that, but trying is what matters, right?
Rudra Review: Plot Analysis
The plot of Rudra is simple and that is the best thing about it. Rudra is a cop who knows almost everything. He can even predict something that has not happened yet. Sounds silly, but you will get it once you watch the show.
He is a retired cop who is living in shadows because of the darkness in his own life. But when the city is taken over by crime once again, everyone wants Rudra back. Rudra takes on the task of saving the city.
But will he be able to do that? Will, he be able to keep his personal and professional life apart from each other.
Rudra Review: What Worked For The Show
Cast
The cast of the show is pretty amazing. Ajay Devgn really shined as a dark and broody cop. It has been so long since we have seen this avatar of Ajay Devgn. We nearly forgot that he has this in him, but it is good to be reminded.
But more than Ajay Devgn, the real gold mine of the show is the supporting cast. Ashwini Kalsekar, Atul Kulkarni, and Tarun Gahlot really carry this show on their own backs. You have to watch this show for them.
Villains
I really loved the villains in this show. They got better with each episode. It started a little bit slow but with each episode, the criminals became more barbaric and sadistic. And that was undoubtedly the best part of the show.
You could see the fear in the eyes of everyone while searching for these criminals. Because they knew, if they don’t catch them now, it will be too late.
Rudra Review: What Did Not Work For The Show
Episodic Approach
Don’t get us wrong, the episodic format is really well and good. And when done right it can really keep everyone interested and on their seats. But the episodic format of Rudra seemed quite bland and the same.
There was no type of character development. It was just 50 minutes of Ajay Devgn solving the crime and catching the criminals while everyone follows him. And the fact that one story should be finished in only 50 minutes makes it a little bit rushed.
Predictability
After a certain point, you will also be able to predict what is going to happen just like Ajay Devgn in the show. In every episode, Rudra will get the first time wrong and then catch the criminal on the second try.
There are so many other moments that are completely predictable and all of these moments are repeated over and over. And after a certain point of time, it becomes really tiring and overdone and you will be really frustrated at that.
Loose Adaptation
No, the writers did everything they could have to make this show more Indian and more believable. But they failed at so many points. There was no traffic in Mumbai, and the killers were roaming the street like normally.
All of these things are really small, but when you combine all of them and look at them from a grand scale, all of these problems make a very big problem that even Rudra can’t tackle.
Rudra Review: Is It Worth It?
We had such high expectations from Rudra. And I think that was our undoing. We can say that you should not compare it with Luther, but you will do it obviously as it is the official remake.
It could have been so much better just with a little bit more work on the script. But in the end, it felt like a CID-type show that was not able to give us anything substantial for a long time.
If you are an Ajay Devgn fan, this show is definitely for you as he is all over the place here. You can even watch it if you are a fan of detective crime drama. But there are better options around.
