The Broken News Review: The Broken News as a show has come out when Indian Web Series need to evolve. We have had so many fantastic web series over the years. But all of those web series revolve around the same kind of genre.
It is either a thriller that revolves around gang warfare/politics or a serial killer. And with production houses like TVF and FilterCopy, we get feel-good comedy shows that everyone loves for apparent reasons.
And there is nothing wrong with these kinds of shows. It is just that we are in dire need of an excellent drama-thriller show. And The Broken News fills that void for the most part. We need more shows like The Broken News, and there is no doubt about that.
With Sonali Bendre making her OTT debut and Jaideep Ahlawat returning after giving one of the best performances in Paatal Lok, The Broken News had many expectations to fill. So, does the show meet those expectations or not? Let’s take a look.
The Broken News Review: Plot
The show focuses on the rivalry between two news channels, Awaaz Bharati and Josh 24/7. And it is not a rivalry over more views and TRP. It is a battle of morals and ethics, which run down more profound than you can imagine.
Awaaz Bharti is led by Amina Qureshi, who wants to present their viewers with credible and ethical news only. And the channel is suffering because of that. On the other hand, Dipankar Sanyal is leading Josh 24/7 into new heights. But he doesn’t even care if the news is correct or not.
And standing between all these extremists and the audience is a young journalist who can go to any depths for the latest piece of news. Radha Bhargava is between these two giants and will make us question what a piece of news is.
The Broken News Review: What Worked For The Show?
Performances
The performances in this show are just stellar. Jaideep Ahlawat completely overshadows anyone with one of the year’s best performances. His character as an egomaniac who can go to any length just to dig up a masala is something else.
Sonali Bendre might have one of the strongest comebacks in the history of a comeback. After battling cancer, she shines here. Every time she started questioning the base of her job, it was visible on her face, and you felt that.
Shriya Pilgaonkar with another worthwhile performance. She does not get enough credit that she is due. Her portrayal of a journalist stuck between everyone is brilliant and will make you feel for the character.
Build-Up
The way the show builds up to the future events is just phenomenal. The show’s first three episodes might feel slow to others, but we adored those episodes. Every scene was a setup for the thing that was bound to happen.
The makers carefully build up every scene in the show for the climax. A lot of information needs to be grasped by you in the first three episodes. If you can do that, you will thoroughly enjoy the show.
Relatable Story
The best thing about The Broken News is its relevance in today’s time. At the crux of the show, it is about Real vs. Fake news. It is about raw vs. masala news. And we see that every single time we open up a news channel.
It also gave us an insight into how tough it is to be a journalist. Radha, who is stuck between these two philanthropists and has to deal with the death of her friend, shows precisely what it is like to be a journalist.

Climax
We said the show’s build-up towards the climax was so brilliantly structured that the expectations were sky-high. But, when we got to the climax, it was underwhelming. You might even be dissapointed to a certain extent.
All of that build-up for that little of a payout is just heartbreaking and disappointing. But it is not something that will keep you out of the eventual second season that is bound to happen sooner rather than later.
Unnecessarily Stretched
Some of the segments in the show were unnecessarily stretched. If those scenes were trimmed down quite a bit, this show would have been ten times better than it was. We are not saying that it will kill the show for you.
But it keeps you out of the show for a specific period, and you skip those scenes. And that is not something you want to feel while watching a show for the first time.
Over-Dramatic Narrative
The show was relevant in today’s time, and there is no doubt about that. But the over-dramatic narrative of certain scenes makes it feel like it is fabricated instead of a mirror of today’s news world. And that is just as confusing to us.
The Broken News: Is It Worth It?
Yes, we are in dire need of a new genre to take over. And shows like The Broken News are perfect examples of these kinds of shows. Apart from some low points, the show is solid and works on every ground.
With outstanding performances by the cast members, it becomes a show that must be watched if you are looking for something fresh and good.
