Dobaaraa Review: Anurag Kashyap returned after a reasonably long time with a pretty exciting project. Dobaaraa is an official remake of Spanish movie Mirage. The rights to Mirage were bought even before the movie’s release in 2018.
So, one can assume that Anurag did that to insert his creativity in the movie and let it blossom. And in reality, that would have saved this movie. Dobaaraa had all the same problems as the original and more.
After a hectic week of multiple movies getting released, Dobaaraa looked like a good escape. But was that the case? Another thing attracting me to the movie was the concept of the movie, which was terrific.
Bollywood has been making time loop movies now. And they might not be masterpieces, but they are still something. So, we are here with the Dobaaraa review, telling you all the good and bad aspects of the movie.
Dobaaraa Review: What Worked For The Movie?
Cast
The movie’s cast did an excellent job with what they were given. Yes, you might say that the tone and mannerism of the characters were weird, but it was due to the storytelling rather than the actors themselves.
Taapsee Pannu has been doing the same roles for a long time, so we know what to expect from her. Rahul Bhatt and Saswata Chatterjee shone in the movie and were responsible for some genuinely funny moments.
Background Score
The Background score of the movie was perfect in many senses. It might have been abrupt and was out of sync for certain scenes. But the movie’s background music was just magical in terms of quality.
The movie could have been so much better if they used the background score by Shor Police more appropriately and according to the needs. It felt like Anurag Kashyap skipped the final screening of the movie after editing.
Dobaaraa Review: What Did Not Worked For The Movie?
Storytelling
The main problem of this movie is the storytelling department. Dobaaraa is a thriller, but you will feel that urgency at no moment in the movie. It will be like watching a comedy tale rather than a thriller.
Another thing is that Dobaaraa did not have any emotional attachment to any characters. You won’t feel an ounce of emotion, which is wrong because the movie wants you to be teary-eyed and cry your heart out.
Music
While the movie’s background score is just beautiful, the movie’s music is just as bad. It did not add anything to the movie whatsoever. And felt out of place all the time. Most of the time, it was just wrong.
Like the background score, the movie’s music was abruptly cut out. This can also fall into bad editing, but the music was not even good in the first place.
Same Problems as Original
My main problem with the movie is that there was no creative freedom shown in the making of this movie. Anurag Kashyap acquired the rights to this movie back in 2018 only, and he released it as a frame-to-frame remake.
It had all the same problems as the original and more. And when you talk about a movie by Anurag Kashyap, you don’t expect to hear that.
Dobaara Review: Is It Worth It?
After reading the reviews and fans’ reactions, it feels like the bar for a good Hindi thriller has gone so low that it is sad. Anurag Kashyap’s movies were something that everyone looked forward to and were something to marvel at.
Dobaaraa is nothing of the above and fails in so many aspects. Dobaara does the bare minimum expected from Anurag Kashyap’s movie and is getting praised. You can wait for Dobaara to drop on OTT and watch it there but should skip watching it in cinemas.
