The Power Of The Dog Review: Jane Campion Returns With A Slow Burning Masterpiece

The Power Of The Dog Review: What happens when a brilliant director does the best job of her career with a fantastic actor who performed of a lifetime with one of the best scripts ever? I don’t think you have to guess now, and you get one of the best movies of the year.

The Power Of Dog is such a beautifully broken movie, and I love it. I am going to give it another watch as soon as possible. It is just that good. So, without wasting much time, let’s get on with the review because you have to watch this movie at least once.

The Power Of The Dog — Plot

The official synopsis reads, “Charismatic rancher Phil Burbank inspires fear and awe in those around him. When his brother brings home a new wife and her son, Phil torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love.”

The plot is as simple as it can get. Phil(Benedict Cumberbatch) is the most demanding guy in the room. He is the most brutal guy everywhere and has to assert his authority as soon as possible. When his brother George marries a woman named Rose and brings herself and her son Peter into Phil’s life, it does not settle with Phil.

Phil does not like it a single bit, and he does everything to make their life miserable. The thought of his brother losing to the warmth of a woman enrages him, and he takes it upon himself to ruin their life.

Until Peter starts to spend time with Phil, all the affection, love, and talks bring something out of Phil, and he starts to change. But what will it lead to? Will Phil accept his new family? Or will he continue to walk down the same cruel path he is always walking alone?

    Cast

Benedict Cumberbatch is not the first name that will come to your mind when you think of a cowboy. But what a performance this was by him. The best of his career so far. His cold eyes, harsh voice, body covered in dirt are just the perfect portrayal of a man who needs love.

And when he starts to open up, you can see how broken he is. I can’t get over his performance this time around. Kirsten Dunst also performed in her lifetime. She is just brilliant as a mother who craves the love of her son. And when he leaves her, you can see her breaking down, and it will break your heart.

    Director

Jane Campion is one of the best directors of all time. And her return to the big screen after almost a decade is just brilliant. It is like she never left. Every shot had a meaning, some meaning behind it.

And she elevated the performance of Benedict and Kirsten as well. And I think that is what every director tries to do, don’t they?

    Story

The story of the movie is straightforward yet very complex. I loved the tension between Peter and Phil in their last scene together. The pressure in the whole film was sky-high, and it kept me invested. I won’t tell you much about the story as it will be a spoiler, but it is good.

The Power Of The Dog Review — Negatives

The Power Of The Dog Review: I seriously can’t think of any negatives at this moment. Perhaps a rewatch is needed, but at this point, this is my favorite movie of the year so far.

The Power Of The Dog Review: Is It Worth It?

If you have read the article till now, you already know that I will say yes to this question. The Power Of The Dog might be the best movie of the year with some of the best performances. So, if you are planning to watch this movie, you definitely should, and you won’t regret it.
